What they are: Aluminium tactile studs are warning domes machined from aluminium alloy bar, Ø35 mm and 4.5 mm high, weighing about a third of an equivalent stainless steel stud. They are supplied with a stem for drill-and-fix installation or 3M self-adhesive backing, in natural silver or anodised colours, and are laid on a 50 mm grid to mark hazards. In some markets the same product is called a warning button, tactile button or tactile dome; the terms are interchangeable.

Aluminium tactile studs sit between polyurethane and stainless steel: they have a metallic appearance and rigidity, but at lower material cost and a fraction of the weight. For a project of 20,000 studs the weight saving runs to several hundred kilograms, which matters for air freight and for installers carrying cartons across a site. MetalX machines the studs in Mumbai from aluminium bar and can anodise them in clear, gold, black, bronze or blue.
Anodising hardens the surface and gives colour that is part of the metal rather than a coating, so contrast against the floor is durable. The concentric ring pattern is machined before anodising.
Three standard configurations are stocked; other tops and anodised colours are produced to order.




For exterior pavements in coastal or salted environments, or platform edges with heavy trolley traffic, stainless steel tactile studs remain the better long-term choice.
Aluminium has about a third of the density of stainless steel. On a mall or campus with 30,000 studs that is a difference of several hundred kilograms in freight and in what installers carry across the site, and aluminium bar is cheaper than stainless steel bar. The stud is machined to the same Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm profile as our stainless steel range, so nothing changes for the user. Anodising hardens the surface and gives colour that is part of the metal rather than a coating.

Interior concourses, malls, offices, schools, covered platforms, footbridges and raised floors are all good uses. Avoid aluminium on coastal exteriors, around pools, and on floors cleaned with strongly alkaline chemicals, all of which dull or pit the surface; use SS 316 there. Avoid it too on heavy trolley routes where a harder metal keeps its pattern longer.
Stem-fixed studs go into Ø8 mm holes with epoxy; the truncated (flat-top) type has the same stem and is used on ADA and ISO drawings. Self-adhesive studs with 3M tape suit polished tile and stone in occupied buildings. Use a nylon or rubber mallet so anodised surfaces are not marked.

Identical to stainless steel studs: template, drill Ø8 mm, clean, epoxy and press; or clean, peel and press for the self-adhesive type. Use a nylon or rubber mallet to avoid marking the anodised surface.
Dimensions align with AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and ISO 23599 warning indicator geometry; the truncated type suits ADA §705 and ISO truncated dome profiles. Colour anodising helps meet luminance contrast requirements in AS/NZS 1428.4.1, BS 8300-1 and the Indian Harmonised Guidelines 2021.
Yes for pedestrian areas. Machined aluminium alloy studs resist normal foot traffic and cleaning machines. For heavy trolley and vehicle over-run, or coastal exteriors, specify stainless steel.
Aluminium forms a protective oxide and anodising increases that protection. In salt-laden coastal air or with alkaline cleaners, some surface dulling can occur; stainless steel is recommended for those sites.
Clear (silver), gold, black, bronze and blue are standard. Other colours can be produced for large orders.

Anodising is a hardened oxide layer that is part of the metal, not a coating, so it does not chip. Under very heavy trolley traffic the crown can eventually brighten; stainless steel is recommended for those routes.
Neutral floor cleaners. Avoid strongly alkaline degreasers and acidic tile cleaners, which dull the surface.
