How to Install Tactile Studs, Strips and Tiles

Methods, tools, layout rules and step-by-step instructions for every MetalX fixing type: stem (drill-and-fix), 3M self-adhesive, screw-fix and integrated tiles.

Quick answer: Tactile studs and strips are installed either by drilling holes and setting a stem in epoxy (most durable, for exteriors and stone), by pressing a 3M self-adhesive base onto a clean smooth floor (fastest, for interiors and retrofits), or by screw-fixing (carpet and timber). Integrated 300 × 300 mm tiles are screwed and bonded through four corner holes. In every case a fibreboard template sets the 50 mm stud grid or 75 mm bar spacing.

2. Layout rules

  • Warning fields: 600 mm deep in the direction of travel (610 mm ADA), full width of the hazard, starting about 300 mm before a stair nosing or platform edge.
  • Stud grid: 50 mm centres, square, aligned with the hazard edge. 36 studs per 300 × 300 mm.
  • Guiding paths: bars parallel to travel at 75 mm centres, 4 bars per 300 mm width; at least 30 mm from walls, 600 mm from obstacles where possible.
  • Decision points: a square warning field where a path turns, branches or ends.
  • Confirm all values against the governing standard.

3. Tools

MetalX fibreboard template (supplied), chalk line, tape measure, straight edge, marker; for stems: hammer drill, Ø8 mm masonry bit, hole-cleaning brush and blower, epoxy or polyester anchoring adhesive with mixing nozzle; for adhesive: isopropyl alcohol, lint-free cloths, rubber mallet; for tiles: Ø6 mm bit, wall plugs, construction adhesive, screwdriver; safety glasses, dust extraction, knee pads.

4. Method A: stem in epoxy (drill-and-fix)

  1. Set out the field or path with chalk lines.
  2. Place the template and mark every hole with a marker.
  3. Drill Ø8 mm (check the stem diameter on your drawing) to the stem length plus 5 mm. For bars, drill all three holes.
  4. Blow and brush each hole clean; dust prevents adhesion.
  5. Inject epoxy to about two-thirds of the hole depth.
  6. Press the stud or bar home, twisting slightly to spread the adhesive. Wipe excess immediately.
  7. Check alignment with a straight edge before the adhesive gels.
  8. Allow to cure per the adhesive data sheet (typically 2–24 hours depending on temperature) before opening to traffic.

Poly-sleeve studs: push the sleeve into the hole first; it grips while the adhesive cures. Hollow-back studs: fill the recess with adhesive and press onto a bed of adhesive on the floor.

5. Method B: 3M self-adhesive (peel-and-stick)

  1. Confirm the floor is smooth, dense, sound and between 10 °C and 40 °C. Seal porous stone; strip wax.
  2. Set out with chalk lines and place the template.
  3. Wipe each position with isopropyl alcohol; let it flash off. Do not touch the cleaned floor.
  4. Peel the liner, drop the stud or bar into the template, press firmly for five seconds. Tap with a rubber mallet.
  5. Move the template and repeat. Reposition within one minute if needed.
  6. Open to foot traffic immediately. No wet cleaning for 24 hours; full bond in 72 hours.

6. Method C: screw-fix (carpet and timber)

  1. Mark positions with the template.
  2. Pierce the carpet at each mark and drill a pilot hole into the subfloor.
  3. Place the flanged stud or bar and drive the countersunk screw until the flange clamps the carpet without dimpling it.

7. Method D: integrated tiles

  1. Dry-lay the tiles to set out the field (two rows for 600 mm depth) and mark the corner holes.
  2. Drill Ø6 mm, insert plugs.
  3. Apply a bead of construction adhesive around the underside of the tile.
  4. Position the tile, drive four countersunk screws.
  5. Butt adjoining tiles tightly so the 50 mm grid continues across joints. Cut tiles with a grinder (metal) or saw (PU), keeping at least one full row of studs.

8. Inspection and handover

  • Every stud and bar firm, level and aligned.
  • Grid and spacing checked with the template; field depth and setback measured.
  • Contrast checked visually and, where required, with a luminance meter.
  • Photographs and the material certificates filed for the access audit.

9. Maintenance

Normal floor cleaning is sufficient for all MetalX products. Avoid abrasive pads on PVD finishes and acidic cleaners on brass. Replace any damaged stud or bar promptly: cut and drill out a stem fixing, or warm and lift an adhesive fixing, then fit a new piece.

What adhesive is used for tactile studs?

For stem-fixed studs and bars, a two-part epoxy or polyester anchoring adhesive injected into the drilled hole. For self-adhesive studs, MetalX applies 3M acrylic foam tape in the factory; no site adhesive is needed. Tiles use construction adhesive plus screws.

What drill size is used for tactile studs?

Typically Ø8 mm for the stems on MetalX studs and bars, to the stem length plus 5 mm; Ø6 mm for the corner screws on tiles. Check the dimensioned drawing supplied with your order.

How long does installation take?

Self-adhesive: 400–600 studs or 150–200 bars per hour for two people. Stem in epoxy: roughly 100–150 studs per hour plus cure time. Tiles: about two minutes per tile (36 studs).

Can tactile indicators be installed on an existing floor without drilling?

Yes. Self-adhesive studs and strips with 3M tape bond permanently to clean, smooth, dense floors such as vitrified tile, polished stone, terrazzo and sealed concrete.

Is a template supplied?

Yes. A fibreboard template pre-cut for 50 mm stud centres and 75 mm bar centres is included free with every MetalX order.
