What they are: Polyurethane (PU) tactile studs are warning domes moulded from a UV-stabilised polyurethane elastomer, Ø35 mm and 4.5 mm high, coloured through the whole body in grey, red, yellow, black, blue or terracotta. They give strong visual contrast and high slip resistance, make no noise under a cane, and are supplied with a stem for drill-and-fix installation or with 3M self-adhesive backing. In some markets the same product is called a warning button, tactile button or tactile dome; the terms are interchangeable.

Overview

Not every project needs metal. Schools, hospitals, offices and retail interiors often want a warning surface that is quiet, high-contrast and inexpensive, and can be replaced easily if a stud is damaged. Polyurethane tactile studs from MetalX meet that brief. They are injection-moulded in Mumbai from a tough polyurethane elastomer that resists abrasion, cleaning chemicals and UV light, and are coloured all the way through so scuffs never expose a different colour.

Because polyurethane is flexible, the studs absorb impact from trolleys and dropped objects that would dent thin metal shells, and they are silent under a white cane, which many users prefer in quiet buildings such as libraries and hospitals. They weigh a fraction of steel studs, which reduces shipping cost for large export orders.

Colour and contrast

Most accessibility standards require a luminance contrast between the tactile indicator and the surrounding floor (for example 30% for integrated indicators and 45% for discrete indicators in AS/NZS 1428.4.1). Six body colours make it straightforward to achieve this: yellow or terracotta on grey floors, black or blue on pale stone, grey on dark carpet. PU versus stainless steel

Choose PU for interiors, covered areas, moderate traffic and tight budgets. Choose stainless steel for exterior pavements, platform edges, very high footfall and where a metallic finish is specified. What the material actually is

Our PU studs are moulded from a thermoset polyurethane elastomer, the same family of material used for forklift wheels and skateboard wheels. It is chosen because it combines high abrasion resistance with enough flexibility to absorb a trolley wheel without cracking, and because pigments can be mixed through the whole compound so the colour is not a coating. The compound is UV-stabilised, tolerates floor cleaning chemicals and works from −20 °C to +70 °C. It is not PVC and it is not recycled plastic; ask for the data sheet if a submittal requires it.

Choosing the colour for contrast

Standards ask for luminance contrast between the stud and the floor, not merely a different colour. The table below is a starting point; we can send samples to check on your actual floor.

Yellow is the convention for warning surfaces in India and much of Asia and is the safe default where the floor is mid-grey.

Stem or self-adhesive?

Stem-fixed PU studs go into a Ø8 mm hole with a drop of adhesive and are the right choice for covered exteriors, pool decks and any floor that is hosed down. Self-adhesive PU studs with 3M tape are the right choice for polished tile, stone and resin floors in occupied buildings, where drilling is unwelcome. Both are moulded from the same compound in the same colours.

How many studs do you need?

PU studs follow the same 50 mm grid as our metal studs: 400 per square metre, 36 per 300 × 300 mm, and 240 per running metre of a 600 mm-deep warning field. A 1.5 m-wide school staircase needs about 360 studs at the top and 360 at the bottom. A carton of 500 PU studs weighs a few kilograms, so a whole school can be shipped by courier.

What affects the price

  1. Fixing: stem studs are the base; the 3M pad adds a small amount.
  2. Colour: the six standard colours are the same price; custom RAL colours carry a tooling and batch minimum.
  3. Size: Ø35 mm is standard; Ø25 mm and Ø30 mm are slightly cheaper but need their own template.
  4. Quantity and destination: volume pricing from a few thousand pieces; freight is low because the studs are light.

As a rule of thumb a PU stud costs about a third of the equivalent stainless steel stud.

Mistakes we see with PU studs

  • Using them on open exterior paving with vehicle over-run. That is stainless steel territory.
  • Choosing the colour from a screen. Ask for a sample and lay it on the actual floor.
  • Adhesive studs on dusty screed. Use stem-fixed studs or seal the floor first.
  • Mixing colours in one field. One colour per field; a two-colour field reads as two messages.
  • A single row instead of a field. Lay 600 mm depth.

Installation

Stem type: mark the 50 mm grid with the template, drill Ø8 mm holes 25 mm deep, clean out, apply a drop of polyurethane or epoxy adhesive and push the stud home. Self-adhesive type: clean the floor with isopropyl alcohol, peel the liner and press firmly for five seconds. Keep dry for 24 hours. PU studs can be cut flush and replaced individually if damaged.

PU studs use the same Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm, 50 mm-grid geometry as our metal studs, aligning with AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and ISO 23599 warning patterns; an ADA truncated dome profile is available. Frequently asked questions about polyurethane tactile studs

Are polyurethane tactile studs durable enough for public buildings?

Yes for interiors and covered areas with normal pedestrian traffic. The polyurethane elastomer resists abrasion, cleaning chemicals and UV, and is colour-fast. For open exterior pavements and platform edges with very heavy traffic we recommend stainless steel.

What colours are PU tactile studs available in?

Grey, red, yellow, black, blue and terracotta as standard, all coloured through the full body. Custom RAL colours can be moulded for large orders.

How much do PU tactile studs cost compared with stainless steel?
