Tactile Indicator Standards Compared: ISO 23599, ADA, AS/NZS 1428.4.1, BS 8300 and Indian Guidelines
The dimensions, spacing, layout and contrast requirements for tactile walking surface indicators in the standards most often quoted on international projects, and how MetalX products relate to each.
Quick answer: All major standards define two patterns. Warning (attention) indicators are truncated domes or cones about 4–5 mm high, roughly 25–35 mm across, spaced 40–60 mm apart in a grid. Directional (guiding) indicators are flat-topped bars about 4–5 mm high, 20–35 mm wide, spaced 57–78 mm apart, laid parallel to the direction of travel. Standards also require the indicator to contrast visually with the surrounding floor. They specify geometry and contrast, not material or fixing method.

Layout principles common to all standards
- Warning fields are placed across the full width of a hazard (stairs, escalators, ramps, platform edges, crossings) and are typically 600 mm deep in the direction of travel.
- Setback: the field starts about 300 mm before a stair nosing or platform edge so the user has time to stop.
- Guiding paths run parallel to the direction of travel, clear of walls and obstacles, and end at a warning field at every turn, junction and destination.
- Never mix messages: domes mean stop, bars mean go. Do not use bars as a warning or domes as a route.
- Contrast is measured as luminance (light reflectance) difference, not colour difference. Yellow on grey and black on cream both work; silver on grey often does not.

Do standards specify the material of tactile indicators?
No. Standards specify geometry, layout and contrast. Stainless steel, brass, aluminium, polyurethane and porcelain are all acceptable if the profile and contrast comply.
