Vitrified TGSI tiles

Porcelain and Ceramic Tactile Tiles – Vitrified Tactile Paving

Full-body porcelain tiles with moulded warning domes or guiding bars that are laid in the same bed as the surrounding floor tiles, giving a flush, colour-matched tactile surface.

Porcelain ceramic tactile tiles with warning domes and directional bars

What they are: Porcelain tactile tiles are vitrified ceramic floor tiles with 36 integrated warning domes or 4 directional bars moulded into the surface. Unlike surface-mounted metal or PU indicators, they are bedded in adhesive with the surrounding floor tiles, so the tactile field sits flush with the floor and matches its colour palette. MetalX supplies them in standard sizes for stations, malls, hospitals and pavements.

Overview

Where a floor is being tiled anyway, porcelain tactile tiles are the most integrated solution: the tiler lays them in the same adhesive bed as the rest of the floor, and the tactile domes or bars become part of the finished surface with no separate fixing operation. The vitrified body is dense, colour-fast, frost resistant and resistant to cleaning chemicals, and the moulded surface texture gives good slip resistance wet and dry.

MetalX supplies porcelain tactile tiles alongside its metal and polyurethane ranges so that a project can specify one source for platform edges (stainless steel), tiled concourses (porcelain) and interior corridors (PU) with consistent dome and bar geometry.

Available types of porcelain tactile tiles

Dome tiles and bar tiles in a range of colours; samples can be sent for colour matching.

Advantages

  • Flush with the surrounding tiles; no trip edge or surface-mounted plate.
  • Colour matched or contrasted to the floor palette.
  • Laid by the tiling contractor with standard tools and adhesives.
  • Vitrified body resists stains, frost and chemicals.

Limitations

Porcelain tiles cannot be retrofitted onto an existing floor without removing tiles, and cut edges around columns need care. For retrofit projects choose self-adhesive studs or surface-mounted stainless steel tiles.

How porcelain tactile tiles differ from surface-mounted indicators

Every other product in our range sits on top of a finished floor. A porcelain tactile tile is the floor: the tiler lays it in the same adhesive bed as the surrounding tiles, at the same time, with the same tools, and grouts it with the rest. There is no plate edge, no screw head and no separate trade on site. The domes or bars are moulded into a full-body vitrified tile, so the colour goes right through and a chipped dome shows the same colour underneath.

Choosing the colour

Because the whole tile is coloured, contrast is easy: yellow on grey concourse tile is the most common combination in India; black or terracotta on ivory floors; grey or ivory on dark stone. Match the surrounding tile format so joints line up, and keep the tactile tile in the same thickness as the field tile so the domes rise 4–5 mm above the finished floor.

How many tiles do you need?

A 600 mm-deep warning field is two rows of 300 mm tiles: 6.7 tiles per running metre. A 300 mm guiding path is 3.3 bar tiles per metre. Order 3–5% extra for cuts and breakages, as with any floor tile, and order the whole quantity from one batch to avoid shade variation.

What affects the price

  1. Colour and batch size: standard colours ship faster; project colours carry a minimum run.
  2. Format: 300 × 300 mm is standard; other formats are made to order.
  3. Quantity and freight: tiles are heavy and travel by sea for export; allow for this in the programme.

Mistakes we see with porcelain tactile tiles

  • Tactile tile thicker or thinner than the field tile. Match thickness so the domes, not the tile edge, are what the foot feels.
  • Joints out of line. Set out the tactile field first and work the floor tiles to it.
  • Cut tiles leaving a single row of domes. Plan the field to whole tiles, or finish with loose studs.
  • Different batches in one field. Shade variation is visible in a tactile field; order from one batch.
  • Spot bedding. Use a full adhesive bed so domes are supported and do not crack under load.

Typical specification clause

“Tactile warning tiles: full-body vitrified porcelain 300 × 300 mm with 36 integrated domes at 50 mm centres rising 4–5 mm above the finished floor, colour [yellow], laid in a full bed of cement-based [or epoxy] tile adhesive flush with adjoining floor tiles, grouted, in two rows to form a 600 mm-deep field across the full hazard width, starting 300 mm from the nosing or platform edge. Supplier: MetalX Engineering Inc., Mumbai, or approved equal.”

Where they are in service

Tiled concourses in Indian bus and metro stations, hospital campuses, shopping malls, and municipal footpaths and plazas laid with paving tiles.

Applications

  • Tiled metro, railway and bus station concourses
  • Airport terminals and car parks
  • Shopping malls and food courts
  • Hospitals and healthcare campuses
  • Footpaths, plazas and bus stops (frost-resistant vitrified body)
  • Schools and universities
  • Government and civic buildings

Why specify MetalX porcelain tactile tiles

  • Laid flush with the surrounding floor by the tiling contractor
  • Vitrified body: colour-fast, frost and chemical resistant
  • Dome and bar geometry consistent with our metal and PU ranges
  • Range of colours for contrast or matching
  • No separate fixing operation or surface plate
  • Good wet slip resistance from moulded texture
  • Single source for porcelain, metal and PU indicators
  • Exported to more than 142 countries

Installation

Lay in a full bed of cement-based or epoxy tile adhesive with the surrounding tiles, keeping joints consistent so the 50 mm dome grid continues across joints. Grout with a matching or contrasting grout. Avoid laying tactile tiles where cuts would leave less than one full row of domes.

Compliance and standards

Dome and bar layouts follow AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and ISO 23599 patterns. Because the tile colour can be chosen freely, luminance contrast requirements in AS/NZS 1428.4.1, BS 8300-1 and the Indian Harmonised Guidelines 2021 are easy to meet. Slip resistance data are available for submittals.

Frequently asked questions about porcelain tactile tiles

How are porcelain tactile tiles installed?

By the tiling contractor, in the same adhesive bed as the surrounding floor tiles. No drilling or separate fixing is required, and the tactile surface sits flush with the floor.

Are porcelain tactile tiles suitable outdoors?

Yes. The vitrified body has low water absorption and is frost resistant, so the tiles are used on footpaths, plazas and bus stops as well as indoors.

What colours are available?

Yellow, grey, terracotta, black and ivory are standard; other colours can be produced for project quantities.

Can porcelain tactile tiles be used to retrofit an existing floor?

Only by removing and replacing the existing tiles. For retrofit without breaking out the floor, use surface-mounted stainless steel tiles or self-adhesive studs and strips.

What size are the tiles?

300 × 300 mm is standard, with 36 domes or 4 bars per tile. Other sizes can be supplied to match the floor module.

What is the lead time?

Typically 7–14 days depending on colour and quantity. Contact us for current stock.

How many porcelain tactile tiles are needed per metre?

About 6.7 tiles per running metre for a 600 mm-deep field (two rows of 300 mm tiles), or 3.3 bar tiles per metre for a 300 mm guiding path, plus 3–5% for cuts and breakages.

What is the price of porcelain tactile tiles?

It depends on colour, format, batch size and freight. Standard colours in 300 × 300 mm are the most economical; project colours carry a minimum run. Request a quotation with your quantity and destination.

Should the tactile tile be the same thickness as the floor tile?

Yes. Match the thickness so the tile edge is flush and only the domes or bars rise above the floor.

Can porcelain tactile tiles be used at a platform edge?

They can, but on platforms with heavy trolley and cleaning-machine traffic we recommend stainless steel tiles, because porcelain domes can chip under wheel impact.
