PVD Coated Tactile Indicators: Gold, Rose Gold, Black and Bronze Stainless Steel Studs and Strips

Stainless steel tactile warning studs and directional strips finished with a titanium-nitride PVD coating. The colour is harder than the steel beneath it, never chips or fades, and lets a project meet luminance-contrast rules or an architectural palette without giving up stainless steel durability.

What they are: PVD coated tactile indicators are MetalX stainless steel studs (Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm high) and directional strips (280 × 35 × 4.5 mm) given a coloured ceramic coating by physical vapour deposition (PVD). Available in gold, rose gold, champagne, black and bronze as standard, or in a custom colour matched to your reference for project quantities, with stem, poly-sleeve or 3M self-adhesive fixing. The coating is a few microns of titanium nitride bonded to the steel, so it wears like the steel itself rather than like paint. In some markets the same product is called a warning button, tactile button or tactile dome; the terms are interchangeable.

Overview

Bright stainless steel is the right material for most tactile installations, but it has one weakness: on grey granite or light tile it often fails the luminance-contrast check that every accessibility standard requires, and in a hotel or flagship store its colour may simply not suit the interior. Paint chips. Plating wears through. PVD coating solves both problems. MetalX applies it to the same machined stainless steel studs and strips it makes in Mumbai, so nothing changes underfoot; only the colour does.

How PVD works, in plain terms

The finished stainless steel stud or strip is cleaned and placed in a vacuum chamber. A titanium target is vaporised and the vapour reacts with nitrogen (or another gas, depending on the shade) and condenses onto the steel as a ceramic layer one to three microns thick. That layer is metallurgically bonded to the surface, is harder than the stainless steel beneath it, and is the same process used to colour watches, taps, door hardware and cutting tools. It contains no paint, lacquer or plated metal, so there is nothing to flake or peel. Because the base is SS 304 or SS 316, the indicator keeps stainless steel’s corrosion resistance; PVD on SS 316 is suitable for coastal exteriors.

For an access audit the important figure is the light reflectance difference between the indicator and the floor, not the hue. Black and bronze give the strongest contrast on light floors; gold and champagne give strong contrast on dark floors. Two reasons projects specify PVD

  • To pass contrast. A grey granite concourse with satin steel studs may read 15–20% contrast where 30–45% is required. Black PVD on the same studs typically passes with margin, and unlike a coloured insert the whole stud contrasts.
  • To suit the interior. Gold or bronze studs and strips in a lobby look like a deliberate metal inlay, and unlike solid brass they need no polishing and can go outdoors.

What is available with a PVD finish

Every solid stainless steel item in the range: warning studs with concentric ring, diamond or plain tops (with or without carborundum insert), directional strips with linear, diamond or plain tops, rounded or square ends, and the self-adhesive versions of both. Integrated tiles can be PVD coated for project quantities. All fixing types are unchanged.

Installation

Install exactly as the uncoated stainless steel version: template, drill Ø8 mm, epoxy and press for stem types; isopropyl alcohol wipe, peel and press for self-adhesive types. Handle with clean gloves, use a nylon or rubber mallet, and mask the indicators during any grinding, grouting or acid washing of the surrounding floor. Clean with neutral products and soft pads; scouring pads dull the polish beneath the coating.

Compliance and standards

The geometry is unchanged from our standard studs and strips, aligning with AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and ISO 23599 and available in an ADA truncated-dome profile. PVD colour is the usual way to meet the luminance-contrast requirements of AS/NZS 1428.4.1 (30% integrated, 45% discrete), ADA §705 (light-on-dark or dark-on-light) and the Indian Harmonised Guidelines 2021 while keeping stainless steel. Frequently asked questions about PVD coated tactile indicators

What is a PVD coated tactile indicator?

A stainless steel tactile stud or strip with a coloured ceramic coating applied by physical vapour deposition. The coating is a few microns of titanium nitride bonded to the steel, harder than the steel itself, in gold, rose gold, champagne, black or bronze.

Does PVD coating wear off?

Not under normal foot traffic. The coating is harder than the stainless steel beneath it and is the same process used on watches and door hardware. It does not chip or peel like paint or plating.

Which PVD colour gives the best contrast?

Black or bronze on light floors such as cream marble, light tile and grey granite; gold or champagne on dark floors. Contrast is measured as light reflectance difference, so check with samples on the actual floor.

Can PVD coated studs be used outdoors?

Yes. PVD on SS 316 is suitable for coastal exteriors and wet areas, and the coating is unaffected by rain, UV and cleaning chemicals.

Is PVD gold the same as brass?

No. Solid brass is a copper alloy that tarnishes and needs polishing. PVD gold is a ceramic layer on stainless steel that keeps its colour without maintenance. Both are available from MetalX.

How much does PVD coating add to the price?

PVD is an added process on a stainless steel stud or strip, so coated items cost more than plain satin steel and roughly the same as solid brass. Price depends on colour, base grade, quantity and destination.

Can you make PVD tactile indicators in a custom colour?

Yes. Beyond the five standard colours we match custom shades to a RAL or Pantone reference or a physical sample, for example a transit line colour, a brand palette or an architect-specified metal finish. Custom colours carry a minimum project quantity and a coated sample is approved before production.

Are self-adhesive PVD studs and strips available?

Yes. Every PVD item is available with factory-applied 3M double-sided tape for drill-free installation on polished floors.

Can integrated tiles be PVD coated?

Yes for project quantities. Loose studs and strips are stocked in PVD gold; other colours and tiles are coated to order in 3–4 working days.

How do I clean PVD coated indicators?

With neutral floor cleaners and soft or medium pads. Avoid scouring pads, abrasive powders and hydrofluoric-acid descalers.

How many PVD studs or strips do I need?

The same as any MetalX stud or strip: 240 studs per running metre of a 600 mm-deep field, 13.3 strips per metre of a 300 mm guiding path, plus 2% for wastage.

Are tactile studs the same as warning buttons?

Yes. Warning buttons, tactile buttons, tactile domes and truncated domes are regional names for the same product: a raised stud fixed to the floor in a grid to warn of a hazard. MetalX PVD coated tactile indicators are supplied under any of these names to the same specification.
