What they are: Stainless steel tactile studs are individual raised domes, typically Ø35 mm across the top and 4.5 mm high, fixed into a floor in a 50 mm grid to create a detectable warning surface for blind and vision-impaired pedestrians. MetalX makes them from SS 304 (general use) and SS 316 (coastal, marine and de-icing-salt environments) with a stem for drill-and-fix installation, a 3M self-adhesive backing, or a screw fixing for carpet. In some markets the same product is called a warning button, tactile button or tactile dome; the terms are interchangeable.

Overview

Tactile warning studs are the most widely specified form of tactile ground surface indicator (TGSI) for hard floors because they can be installed into an existing surface without removing it. MetalX Engineering Inc. has manufactured stainless steel tactile studs at its Mumbai factory for more than thirty years, supplying metro rail, airport, hospital and commercial projects in India, the Middle East, Europe and North America.

Each stud is turned from solid stainless steel bar on CNC lathes, machined to a 35 mm top diameter and 4.5 mm height, then finished with the selected top pattern. The concentric ring pattern is our default because it gives good slip resistance without collecting dirt. Diamond (knurled) tops give the highest grip for wet outdoor areas, while carborundum-insert and poly-insert tops add an abrasive or coloured centre for traction and visual contrast.

What a stainless steel tactile stud is, and what it is for

A tactile stud is a small raised dome fixed to a floor so that a person who is blind or has low vision can feel it underfoot or with a cane. A field of studs laid in a grid means one thing: stop, there is a hazard or a decision point ahead. That hazard might be the first step of a staircase, the edge of a metro platform, the bottom of a ramp or the kerb at a road crossing. Studs are the warning half of a tactile system; the guiding half is the directional strip, which leads a person to the point where the studs take over.

Stainless steel is the material of choice when the studs must survive the worst conditions a floor sees: monsoon rain, luggage trolleys, floor scrubbers, de-icing salt and thirty years of footfall. Unlike coated or plated studs there is nothing to wear through, and unlike polymer studs there is nothing to crack or fade.

SS 304 or SS 316: which grade should you specify?

SS 304 is the standard choice for indoor floors, covered stations and most urban pavements. SS 316 contains 2–3% molybdenum, which gives it markedly better resistance to chlorides. Our client on a Saudi Arabia metro project selected SS 316 studs for exactly this reason. Both grades are non-magnetic in the annealed condition and are supplied with mill test certificates on request.

If a tender simply says “stainless steel” without a grade, ask. The price difference between 304 and 316 is small compared with the cost of replacing pitted studs on a live platform.

Choosing the top pattern

All six patterns give the same tactile signal. The choice is about grip, dirt, appearance and contrast.

  • Concentric rings: the all-round choice. Good wet grip, self-cleaning under foot traffic, neat appearance. Used on most of the studs we ship.
  • Diamond (knurled): sharper texture for open-air ramps, kerbs and plazas where the floor is often wet. Holds a little more dirt than rings.
  • Plain top: smooth polished dome for interiors where the architect wants the cleanest look. Lower grip, so keep it to dry areas.
  • Carborundum insert: a disc of silicon-carbide grit bonded into the top. The highest wet slip resistance of any stud we make, and the black insert also gives contrast on light floors. Standard on many transport specifications.
  • Coloured poly insert: a polyurethane cap in yellow, red, blue, black or grey pressed into the top. Used where the luminance contrast requirement cannot be met by bright steel on a grey floor.
  • PVD colour coating: a titanium-nitride layer in gold, rose gold, black or bronze applied to the whole stud. It is harder than the steel and does not chip. Chosen for hotels and premium retail.

How many studs do you need?

Studs sit on a 50 mm grid, so every 300 × 300 mm square holds 36 studs and every square metre holds 400. Most standards call for a warning field 600 mm deep across the full width of the hazard, which works out to 240 studs per running metre of stair edge, platform edge or kerb ramp. A typical stair landing 2 m wide therefore needs about 480 studs at the top and another 480 at the bottom. Add 2% for damage and setting-out errors. For long straight runs, compare the cost against integrated stainless steel tiles, which carry 36 studs on one plate and fix with four screws.

What affects the price

We quote every enquiry individually, but the same five things move the price of a stainless steel tactile stud:

  1. Grade: SS 316 costs more than SS 304 because the raw bar costs more.
  2. Size: a Ø35 mm stud uses more material than a Ø25 mm stud; stem length also matters.
  3. Top pattern: plain and concentric ring are the base price; carborundum and poly inserts add an operation; PVD coating adds a further process.
  4. Fixing: 3M self-adhesive backing costs slightly more per stud than a plain stem, but saves far more on installation.
  5. Quantity and destination: volume pricing applies from a few thousand pieces; freight is quoted to your city by air or sea.

Studs are packed 500 or 1,000 to a carton with a fibreboard drilling template in every order. Standard items ship from stock in Mumbai; non-stock items are made in 3–4 working days.

Mistakes we see on site, and how to avoid them

  • Field too shallow. A single row of studs is not a warning field. Lay at least 600 mm depth in the direction of travel.
  • Field starting at the nosing. Most standards want the field to start about 300 mm before the first step or platform edge so the user has time to stop.
  • Dust left in the drilled holes. Epoxy does not bond to dust. Blow and brush every hole before injecting adhesive.
  • Bars used as a warning. Directional strips mean “go”, studs mean “stop”. Never swap them.
  • No contrast check. Bright steel on grey granite can fail a luminance contrast audit. Specify carborundum inserts, poly inserts or PVD colour if the floor is grey.
  • Wrong grade near the sea. SS 304 on a coastal platform will tea-stain within a couple of monsoons. Use SS 316.

Installation

Mark the grid using the supplied fibreboard template (50 mm centres), drill Ø8–10 mm holes to the stem length plus 5 mm, clean out dust, inject epoxy or polyester anchoring adhesive and press each stud home. Studs can be walked on once the adhesive has cured (typically 2–24 hours depending on product and temperature). Self-adhesive studs need only a clean, dry, smooth surface and firm pressure; full bond strength develops within 72 hours.

Compliance and standards

The 35 mm top, 4.5 mm height and 50 mm grid used by MetalX correspond to the warning (attention) pattern dimensions in AS/NZS 1428.4.1:2009 and fall within the ranges given in ISO 23599:2019. For US projects the ADA 2010 Standards §705 require truncated domes with a 23–36 mm base, 5.1 mm height and 41–61 mm spacing; we supply an ADA dome profile on request. In India, the Harmonised Guidelines and Standards for Universal Accessibility (2021) and IRC:103-2012 call for warning blocks at hazards and level changes. Frequently asked questions about stainless steel tactile studs

What size are stainless steel tactile studs?

The MetalX standard stainless steel tactile stud has a 35 mm top diameter and stands 4.5 mm above the finished floor. Studs are laid at 50 mm centres, giving 36 studs per 300 × 300 mm area. Smaller 25 mm and 30 mm diameters, 5 mm heights and ADA dome profiles are available on request.

Should I choose SS 304 or SS 316 tactile studs?

Choose SS 304 for indoor floors and most inland pavements. Choose SS 316 for coastal or marine sites, pool areas, roads treated with de-icing salt and chemical-exposure areas, because its molybdenum content resists chloride pitting. SS 316 costs more but avoids staining and pitting over the life of the installation.

How are stainless steel tactile studs installed?

Stem-type studs are set into drilled holes with epoxy adhesive using the fibreboard template we supply for spacing. Self-adhesive studs are pressed onto a clean, dry, smooth floor with no drilling. Screw-fix studs are used on carpet and timber. Detailed steps are on our installation guide page.

Are stainless steel tactile studs slip resistant?

Yes. The concentric ring and diamond patterns are machined into the top to provide grip in wet conditions. For the highest slip resistance, specify the carborundum-insert type, which has a silicon-carbide abrasive centre.

Can stainless steel studs be supplied in colour?

Yes. We apply PVD (physical vapour deposition) coatings in gold, rose gold, black and bronze, and we also offer coloured polyurethane inserts. Both options provide the visual (luminance) contrast that most standards require without paint that wears off.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

There is no fixed minimum order. Standard configurations ship from stock in Mumbai; non-stock items are manufactured in 3–4 working days, and urgent orders can be delivered worldwide within 7 days by air courier.

How many stainless steel tactile studs are needed per square metre?

At 50 mm centres, 400 studs per square metre, or 36 per 300 × 300 mm. A standard 600 mm-deep warning field needs 240 studs per running metre of stair edge or platform edge.

What is the price of stainless steel tactile studs?

Price depends on grade (SS 304 or 316), diameter, top pattern, fixing type, quantity and destination. Plain and concentric ring studs in SS 304 are the base price; carborundum inserts, PVD coating and SS 316 cost more. Send quantities and a delivery city for a firm quotation.

Do stainless steel tactile studs rust?

SS 304 does not rust in normal indoor or inland outdoor use. Near the sea, around pools or where de-icing salt is used, SS 304 can show brown tea-staining and pitting; SS 316 is specified for those sites and stays bright.

Can the studs be removed and reused?

Stem-fixed studs set in epoxy are permanent and are cut flush if a layout changes. Self-adhesive studs can be warmed and lifted, and screw-fix studs can be unscrewed and reused.

How long do stainless steel tactile studs last?

Solid stainless steel studs typically outlast the floor they are fixed to. Installations we supplied more than twenty years ago are still in service in Indian railway stations with no maintenance beyond normal cleaning.

Are tactile studs the same as warning buttons?

Yes. Warning buttons, tactile buttons, tactile domes and truncated domes are regional names for the same product: a raised stud fixed to the floor in a grid to warn of a hazard. MetalX stainless steel tactile studs are supplied under any of these names to the same specification.
