Choosing a tactile stud material is a long-term decision: the studs will be in the floor for the life of the building, and replacing them means closing the area. Brass and stainless steel are both premium, solid-metal options, and they age very differently depending on where they are installed.
Brass tactile studs are machined from a copper-zinc alloy with a natural gold colour. Stainless steel tactile studs are machined from AISI 304 or 316, a chromium-nickel steel that forms a self-healing oxide layer. MetalX machines both to the same Ø35 mm top, 4.5 mm height and 50 mm grid, with the same concentric ring, carborundum and self-adhesive options.
On installation day brass is warm gold, stainless steel is bright silver, and both are crisp and slip resistant. Differences only appear with time and exposure.
Stainless steel needs nothing beyond floor cleaning for the life of the building. Brass in a demanding location needs periodic polishing or a lacquer that itself wears and must be renewed. Over twenty years that maintenance can exceed the original cost of the studs.
Brass is softer than stainless steel. Under normal footfall the machined ring pattern lasts for many years on both; under heavy trolley traffic stainless steel keeps a crisper pattern for longer.
Gold brass on pale stone and silver stainless steel on grey granite can both fall short of the luminance contrast standards require. Solutions exist for both: carborundum or coloured poly inserts for brass, and PVD colour coating or inserts for stainless steel.
Brass bar costs more than stainless steel bar, so brass studs carry a first-cost premium as well as higher lifetime maintenance. Stainless steel is the value option unless the design requires brass's colour.

Use brass indoors where the design calls for its colour and the facility is cleaned regularly: hotels, galleries, banks, heritage interiors. Use stainless steel everywhere else, and SS 316 anywhere near the sea. If you want gold outdoors, specify PVD gold stainless steel studs. Yes, slowly indoors and quickly outdoors or in humid air. Regular cleaning slows the change; polishing or a clear lacquer restores the bright finish.
Effectively yes. Normal floor cleaning is all that is needed. SS 316 remains bright even in coastal environments.
Brass, if the interior palette is warm and the floor is cleaned daily. Otherwise PVD gold stainless steel gives the same colour with no maintenance.
