Footpaths and crossings are where tactile indicators do the most work and take the most punishment: rain, dust, vehicle over-run, street-cleaning machines and, in some climates, de-icing salt. This guide covers the layout rules that most standards share and the material choices that survive on the street, for engineers working on smart-city footpath programmes, road upgrades and bus corridors.

Kerb ramps

The warning field goes at the bottom of the ramp, where the footpath meets the carriageway, spanning the full width of the ramp and 600 mm deep (610 mm under ADA). Its purpose is to tell a person that the next step is into the road. On a flush or near-flush kerb the field is the only thing that marks the boundary, so it must be continuous with no gaps at the ramp wings. Where the ramp is wider than the crossing, the field still spans the ramp.

Leading to the crossing

A directional run of bars leads from the line of travel along the footpath to the centre of the warning field, so that a person walking along the footpath finds the crossing rather than walking past it. The run is normally 300 mm wide and can be short, a few metres, on a narrow footpath. At signalised crossings many standards align the run with the push-button pole.

Refuges and medians

A pedestrian refuge wide enough to stand on gets a warning field at each edge. A wide median, where the person walks some distance, gets warning fields at each edge and a directional run between them so the route is not lost mid-road.

Bus stops

A warning field at the boarding point, usually 600 mm deep and spanning the boarding area, and a directional run from the footpath to the boarding point. Bus rapid transit platforms are treated like rail platforms with a continuous edge field.

Self-adhesive fixing is not recommended on open pavements; use stem-fixed studs or screw-and-adhesive tiles.

Contrast outdoors

Grey concrete against satin stainless steel often fails a contrast check. Use yellow poly inserts, black carborundum inserts or PVD black on stainless steel, or yellow porcelain tiles. Read the luminance contrast guide before finalising.

Quantities per crossing

For a 2 m-wide kerb ramp on each side of the road: two fields of 2 m × 0.6 m, so about 960 studs or 28 tiles, plus around 3 m of directional run each side (40 bars each). Installation notes for street work

  • Cut the field into the paving or set it before the paving is finished; surface-mounted plates on paving blocks fail under sweepers.
  • Drill and clean holes properly; dust is the main cause of loose studs on footpaths.
  • Keep the field clear of drainage gullies and inspection covers, and stop it 300 mm from any pole.
  • Use SS 316 wherever there is any doubt about salt.
