When Should You Use Tactile Tiles Instead of Tactile Studs?

Tactile warning surfaces can be built from individual studs set one at a time, or from integrated tiles that carry 36 studs (or 4 directional bars) on a single 300 × 300 mm plate. Both produce a compliant surface. The right format depends on the shape of the area, the time available, the floor you are fixing to, and how the surface will be maintained.

What an integrated tactile tile is

A MetalX stainless steel tactile tile is a 1.8 mm plate, 300 × 300 mm, with 36 pressed or welded studs at 50 mm centres or 4 bars at 75 mm centres. It is fixed with four countersunk corner screws and construction adhesive. PU tactile tiles and brass tactile tiles follow the same layout. The stud geometry is identical to our loose studs, so the surface feels the same underfoot.

Use tiles when

  • The hazard is long and straight. Platform edges, kerb ramps, and the top and bottom of escalators are rectangles that tile perfectly with two rows of 300 mm tiles for a 600 mm-deep field.
  • Time on site is limited. In an operating station the work window may be four hours overnight. A crew can fix 40 or 50 tiles (1,500–1,800 studs) in that window; drilling 1,800 individual holes is not possible.
  • Alignment is critical. Every stud on a tile is already in the right place. Misaligned rows are the most common defect in stud installations and they are visible for the life of the building.
  • Vandalism or theft is a risk. A single stud can be prised out; a tile fixed with four screws and adhesive cannot.
  • Uniform architectural appearance matters. Tiles read as a deliberate metal inlay.

Use individual studs when

  • The layout curves around columns, bends in a corridor or a circular plaza. Studs follow any line.
  • The area is small: a single door threshold or a short stair landing where cutting tiles wastes material.
  • The floor is heritage stone or mosaic and the client wants minimal visual intrusion; 35 mm studs are far less noticeable than a plate.
  • Drilling must be minimised. Self-adhesive studs need no holes at all.
  • The floor is uneven. A rigid plate needs a flat bed; a stud tolerates local undulation.

A simple rule

If you can draw the warning field as a rectangle at least 600 mm wide and you are fixing to a flat, sound floor, use tiles. If the field bends, is small, or must go onto an existing polished floor without drilling, use studs. On most large projects, the answer is both: tiles on the platform edge, studs around the columns.

Working out quantities

For a 600 mm-deep warning strip you need two rows of tiles, so 6.7 tiles per running metre (add 2% for cutting). For studs at 50 mm centres over the same strip, allow 240 studs per metre. MetalX will prepare a take-off from your drawings on request.

Can tactile tiles be cut?

Stainless steel tiles can be cut with an angle grinder and the edge deburred; PU tiles cut with a knife or fine saw. Keep at least one full row of studs on any cut piece.
