Stairs are the most common place a tactile warning field is installed, and the most common place it is installed wrongly. The rules are simple once the reason behind them is clear: the field must give a person walking at normal speed enough warning to stop before the first step, and it must be unmistakable underfoot.
The four rules
- Top and bottom of every flight. A person descending needs warning that the floor is about to drop; a person ascending needs warning that the floor is about to rise. Both landings get a field.
- Full width. The field runs from wall to wall, or from wall to balustrade. A field narrower than the stair leaves an unmarked route to the edge.
- 600 mm deep. Measured in the direction of travel. AS/NZS 1428.4.1 allows 600–800 mm; ADA uses 610 mm; ISO 23599 and Indian guidelines use 600 mm as the working minimum. Two rows of 300 mm tiles or twelve rows of studs at 50 mm centres.
- 300 mm setback. The near edge of the field starts about 300 mm back from the nosing of the first step (AS/NZS 1428.4.1: 300 ± 10 mm). That gap gives a person one more stride after feeling the studs before the step arrives. Check the governing standard; some UK guidance uses a different setback for corduroy surfaces.
Setting out in practice
Snap a chalk line 300 mm back from the nosing, parallel to it. Snap a second line 600 mm further back. Snap the side lines at the walls or balustrades. That rectangle is the field. Lay the fibreboard template on the near line so the first row of studs is exactly 300 mm from the nosing, and work back. For tiles, dry-lay two rows and mark the corner holes before drilling. Intermediate landings
A half-landing where the stair turns is normally treated as part of the flight and does not get a field, provided the landing is short (most guidance uses about 3 m as the threshold). A long landing, or one that opens onto a corridor, is treated as a floor and gets a field at the head and foot of each flight it serves.
Escalators and travelators
The same rules apply at the approach to the comb plate: a full-width field, 600 mm deep, starting about 300 mm before the comb. Many transit specifications add a directional path leading to the centre of the escalator.
