Ten years ago almost every tactile stud was fixed with a stem set in epoxy. Today a large share of the studs MetalX ships to hospitals, stations, malls and offices leave the factory with a die-cut pad of 3M double-sided acrylic foam tape on the base instead. The shift is driven by contractors who need to work in occupied buildings and by facility managers who want accessibility upgrades without closures.
The tape used on MetalX self-adhesive tactile studs is a high-bond acrylic foam tape from the same family used to attach exterior trim to vehicles and cladding panels to buildings. The foam core absorbs shock and thermal movement; the acrylic adhesive continues to wet out and strengthen for about 72 hours after application, reaching a bond that is stronger than most floor finishes.
Drilling 36 holes per 300 mm square in a live hospital corridor means dust control, noise complaints and hoarding. Adhesive studs need a cloth, isopropyl alcohol, the positioning template and a rubber mallet. A two-person crew can install several hundred studs in an off-peak window and hand the floor back immediately.
The stud itself costs about the same as a stem-fixed version, but labour drops sharply. On vitrified tile, contractors report installed costs 40–60% lower than drill-and-fix.
Drilling polished granite or large-format porcelain risks chipping and cracked tiles. Adhesive fixing leaves the floor intact, and the studs can be removed later with heat if the layout changes.
Standards such as AS/NZS 1428.4.1, ISO 23599 and the ADA specify the surface profile, spacing and contrast, not the fixing method. A self-adhesive stud with the same Ø35 mm, 4.5 mm dome is as compliant as a drilled one.
MetalX applies the tape to stainless steel, brass, aluminium and PU studs, so a designer can choose the material for each zone without changing the installation method.
The tape needs a smooth, dense, clean surface. It does not bond reliably to dusty or unsealed concrete, rough paving, carpet or surfaces with standing water. Exterior pavements with freeze-thaw cycles and vehicle over-run should use stem-fixed studs in epoxy. When in doubt, MetalX can supply studs with both tape and a stem so epoxy can be added at critical points.

On smooth, sealed exterior surfaces in covered areas, yes. For exposed pavements with rain, dust, freeze-thaw and vehicles we recommend stem-fixed studs.
The tape is about 1 mm thick, so the finished height above the floor is approximately 5.5 mm, which remains within the ranges of the major standards.
Yes. Warm the stud with a heat gun, prise it up and clean residue with a citrus or isopropyl cleaner. This makes the studs suitable for leased premises and temporary layouts.
