A guiding path of 100 metres contains about 1,350 directional bars. With stem fixing that means roughly 4,000 drilled holes, each filled with epoxy and each a potential chipped tile. With self-adhesive strips it means none. This article looks at where the savings come from, which floors qualify, and how to write the specification.
For a typical stainless steel guiding path the material is a minority of the installed cost; labour, access, dust control and floor protection make up the rest. Drilling is slow, noisy and often restricted to night shifts in occupied buildings. Every hour saved on the floor is the biggest lever on the total price.

3M acrylic foam tape bonds permanently to dense, smooth, clean surfaces: vitrified and ceramic tile, polished granite and marble, terrazzo, epoxy floors, sealed concrete and metal. It is not suitable for unsealed or dusty concrete, textured paving, carpet or areas with standing water. Porous natural stone should be sealed first.

A short clause avoids most problems: “Tactile directional strips 280 × 35 × 4.5 mm, [material], linear top pattern, with factory-applied 3M acrylic foam tape, installed at 75 mm centres on a surface cleaned with isopropyl alcohol at 10–40 °C; no wet cleaning for 24 hours after installation.” Add the governing standard (for example AS/NZS 1428.4.1 or ISO 23599) and the required luminance contrast.
A guiding path ends at a hazard or decision point marked by warning studs. Self-adhesive tactile studs use the same tape and the same 4.5 mm height, so the whole system installs with one method.
Material cost is similar, but installation labour typically falls by 60–70%, giving installed costs 40–60% lower on tile and stone floors.
Not on a properly prepared dense floor. The acrylic foam tape is designed for structural bonding and tolerates shock and thermal movement.
